SAINT-SAENS, CAMILLE / Altenberg Trio Wien / Complete Piano Trios / Hybrid Stereo+Surround SACD

Artist: Claus-Christian Schuster, Amiram Ganz, Martin Hornstein Since its debut at the 1994 Salzburg Mozart Week. The Altenberg Trio has enjoyed great success with perfomances in the United States, Canada and all over Europe. In Austria the trio presents a regular concert series at Vienna's famed "Musikverein". The Altenberg Trio's numerous recordings for Challenge Classics label have earned critical acclaim throughout the musical world; their recording of Schumann's Piano Trios was awarded the Schumann Prize (Zwickau 1999), while a recording of American Piano Trios has earned them an Edison Award (Amsterdam 2000). The "Viennese Touch", for which the Altenberg Trio has often been commended, is not simply a question of musical technique, but represents a specific artistic orientation, rooted in a city that was the center of an empire and the Crossroads of many distinctive cultures in the 18th and 19th centuries. Saint-Sa‘ns (1835-1921) He took up the trio sketches and in October 1864 had already completed the work. There is very little about this trio -the no. 1- that is extraordinay, and yet there is also no doubt that with this composition Saint-Sa‘ns has created an absolute masterpiece. He solves the piano trio's inherent problems of texture and Balance in a way that makes the work a paradigmatic ideal for the next generation of French composers (Ravel's unreserved admiration for this trio was avowedly one of the motivating forces behind the composition of its own). Two weeks after the triumphant Paris première of Samson and Delila (November 23, 1892) the second trio was launched. The critics at the first performance were already finding the work "monumental", and this has probably been one of the chief obstacles to its attaining wider currency. The average listener feels entitled to expect something else from Saint-Sa‘ns. But anyone prepared to follow the composer on his surprising paths, will discover one of the richest and most fascinating works in the entire trio literature. Regarding the very small amount of recordings of those trios, the Altenberg Trio is a welcome addition to every cd collection.
